Today learnt the following during counselling for DM type I
Insulins can be kept 4weeks (28days) to 30 days in room temperature - i.e. in a cool dark place away from light. Some where inside but not near window. One may keep it in the fridge but more rigourous mixing and warming required - but dun shake like shaker pen hor. Bubbles formed will kill the mixture and cause it to be unusable. Another reason to avoid fridge is because inject cold stuff into under skin / fat layer - not very shiok.
Do not rub injection site
Do not change location of injection site. If inject around tummy, stick to the tummy area. Don't change to arm and thighs without letting doctor know - blood flow properties are different. Can cause changes in insulin concentration and rate of release - I think doctor see the blood glucose diary will mcc also.
Use regular insulin before meals.
If need so, change to ultrafast insulin if taking just before meals or after meals.
Insulin syringes come in 30mml, 50 mml, 100 mml. For an amount like 26 mml, the plunger of the syringe will be very long, hard to self inject - use a 50mml instead. If your eyes mcc, use a smaller syringer sincethe graduations are clearer.
Poorly managed DM - I and II - with hyperglycaemia will have increased risk of neuropath and cardiopathy. The DM I people are usually more careful in what they eat - usually very bland - as their risk of getting comorbidities are higher.
